The parents of the children killed in America’s second deadliest shooting identified their loved ones from photographs because authorities tried to spare them further agony, as fresh details of how the families learnt of their losses emerged. Religion is often said to bring consolation to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, or to those who are fearful of their own demise. It provides this consolation either by offering a narrative of what happens after death, usually involving angels, virgins, clouds, reunions with dead relatives etc. or by giving some greater meaning to the whole living/dying thing. To me this whole consolatory process is built on a false premise; that death is radically different to what is happening when a person is alive and that it is a totally different state completely unknowable to the living but which one will move into upon dying...

10 years ago the United States was attacked by Osama bin Laden. I, like everyone else in the country was stunned to watch the total destruction of our twin towers, and live for months with the pain and confusion caused by one person. I remember the exact moment our beautiful country was attacked. I can go right back in time and conjure up the exact emotions I had the time the attacks were taking place. I was full of grief and full of anger. So I wrote We Shall Never Surrender. During that time, I wrote down my feelings and eventually put this song together. “We Shall Never Surrender” is a song of very raw emotions. I managed to write the entire song in under a week, record it, and master it down to what it is today. The song was mastered and complete on September 22, 2001.
